About Yelakitj Moort Nyungar
Association
|
Yelakitj Moort is named
after William Thomas Bennell, whose Nyungar name was Yelakitj
- Man of Good Hearing.
He was given this name
because he was always sitting down listening to his fore fathers
telling the history of the Whadjuk and Ballardong people's story
of the Swan River up to the Boyagin Rock areas along the Avon
River.
Yelakitj married Muriel
McGuire, the daughter of Doolyak and John McGuire.
Doolyak was John Monger
Bennell's sister, one of the original inhabitants of the Lake
Monger and Herdsman Lake area.
Yelakitj was the story
teller - he was the minder of the Nyungar story. His stories
are recorded in oral history, video and book.
We are his direct descendants.
